چکیده

We present a study of the electron magnetohydrodynamics Grad–Shafranov (GS) reconstruction diffusion region (EDR) magnetic reconnection. Two-dimensionality magnetoplasma configuration and steady state are two basic assumptions GS technique, which represent method’s fundamental limitations. The demonstrates that can provide physically meaningful results even when these assumptions, hardly fulfilled in spacecraft observations, violated. This conclusion is supported by configurations EDRs, encountered Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) Mission on July 11, 2017 September 8, 2018. Here, former event exhibited violation two-dimensionality, latter state. In both cases, despite deviations from ideal model configuration, reasonable obtained implementing herein introduced compressible model. addition to discussed limitations, all existing versions technique rely number minor simplifying restrict scope efficiency. prospects for further improvement generalization analytically. Our analysis reveals nearly limitations be overcome using polynomial MMS-tailored space rotationally invariant variables instead Cartesian coordinates.

Regimes of the electron diffusion region in magnetic reconnection.

The electron diffusion region during magnetic reconnection lies in different regimes depending on the pressure anisotropy, which is regulated by the properties of thermal electron orbits. In kinetic simulations at the weakest guide fields, pitch angle mixing in velocity space causes the outflow electron pressure to become nearly isotropic. Above a threshold guide field that depends on a range o...

First resolved observations of the demagnetized electron-diffusion region of an astrophysical magnetic-reconnection site.

Spatially resolved, diagnostic signatures across the X-line and electron-diffusion region (EDR) by the Polar spacecraft are reported at Earth's magnetopause. The X-line traversal has a local electron's skin depth scale. First, resolved EDR profiles are presented with peak electron thermal Mach numbers >1.5, anisotropy >7, calibrated electron agyrotropy >1, and misordered expansion parameters in...

Kinetic structure of the electron diffusion region in antiparallel magnetic reconnection.

Strong electron pressure anisotropy has been observed upstream of electron diffusion regions during reconnection in Earth's magnetotail and kinetic simulations. For collisionless antiparallel reconnection, we find that the anisotropy drives the electron current in the electron diffusion region, and that this current is insensitive to the reconnection electric field. Reconstruction of the electr...

Evidence for an elongated (>60 ion skin depths) electron diffusion region during fast magnetic reconnection.

Observations of an extremely elongated electron diffusion region occurring during fast reconnection are presented. Cluster spacecraft in situ observations of an expanding reconnection exhaust reveal a broad current layer ( approximately 10 ion skin depths thick) supporting the reversal of the reconnecting magnetic field together with an intense current embedded at the center that is due to a su...
